The math
- You pay = $1.99 × 2 = $3.98
- Each = $3.98 ÷ 3 = about $1.33 (rounded to the cent)
- % off = 1 ÷ 3 = 33.3%, sign says 33%
Percent off is always rounded down, so a sign never says 30% when the real cut is 29.6%.

How it works

Before you post a sale price
- A "Reg." or "was" price should be a price you really charged, openly and for a reasonable time (FTC 16 CFR 233.1).
- Some states require unit price labels, and the rules differ by state. Check with your state weights and measures office.
- Take sale signs down when the sale ends.
